Biography
Since the debut album back in 2005, Swedish sound artist Dag Rosenqvist has released over 50 albums, EP’s and cassette tapes in a vast array of different constellations. Today he creates and release music under his own name as well as with contemporary classical duo From the Mouth of the Sun with American musician and composer Aaron Martin and with the folk-synth trio Småland that also consist of Christian Hutchinson Berg and Thobias Eidevald.
Using a wide array of acoustic and electric instruments as a foundation for his compositions, and relying mainly on analogue equipment, Dag has managed to create his own musical landscape. Elements of drone, improvisation, noise and lo-fi aesthetics are all filtered through a skewed, melodic pop sensibility, resulting in something highly personal.
In addition to releasing regular albums, he has created music for stage and for film. In 2024 he wrote the music for Italian chorographer Paolo Mangiola’s Geographers of Solitude, a co-production between ŻfinMalta – National Dance Company and Ballet D’Jerri in Jersey, that premiered at Teatru Manoel in Valletta, Malta. He has also worked with Swedish mentalist and author Henrik Fexeus, scoring the performance Mentalisten that premiered at Rival in Stockholm in October 2024 and that went on to play a string of shows during 2024-2025. Over the years he has collaborated with Aaron Martin on various film and dance scores. Among those are the films Menashe (2017) by Joshua Z. Weinstein, A Broken House (2021) by Jimmy Goldblum, which was shortlisted for an Oscar and won IDA Documentary Awards for “Best Short”, and Between the Mountain and the Sky (2024) by director Jeremy Power Regimbal which among other awards went on to win Audience Choice and Student Choice at Telluride Mountain Film Festival. 2022 saw the premiere of the dance performance Valley of the Hummingbirds at Staatstheater Braunschweig in Germany, and in February 2024 the piece In Wind or Dust premiered at Skånes Dansteater in Malmö, both of which were choregraphed by Greek duo Danae & Dionysios and scored by Aaron Martin and Dag Rosenqvist.
He has an ongoing collaboration with Gothenburg based visual artist Angelica Olsson. In June 2024 they premiered the video essay Still a prison of this virtual space, an audiovisual work that featured the voices of Lisen Rylander-Löve, Malin Wättring, Anne Garner, Claire Deak and Sofia Nystrand. The film premiered at the bone house at Katarina kyrka in Stockholm and was also on display inside the church.
Over the years he has also collaborated with artists such as Machinefabriek, Mike Weis (Zelienople), Simon Scott (Slowdive) and Edinburgh based sound artist Matthew Collings. His discography includes releases on labels such as Miasmah [NO], Fang Bomb [SE], Dronarivm [NL], Lost Tribe Sound [US], Time Released Sound [US], Kning Disk [SE] and Karaoke Kalk [DE].
